Last year the Dutchess County IDA provided a $2.12 million tax break to a project on Overlook Road in LaGrange, which town officials said would providing housing for “local workers.” Now advertised as “luxury apartments,” these rental units start at $1650/month, unaffordable for most working people.
A week before the 2019 election every household in Dutchess received a glossy mailer from the County Executive praising his own proposed 2020 budget. The cost to taxpayers for printing and mailing was $38,000.
For a thorough look at one example of why Democratic Legislators are sounding the alarm on the County’s spending on capital projects, see the recent audit by Dutchess County Comptroller Robin Lois on the renovation of offices at 45 Market St. in Poughkeepsie. Originally budgeted for $2.4 million, the finished project will now cost taxpayers over $7.1 million.
